Spring is always a busy time in Dr. Love's general practice office. This day was no exception, full of scraped knees, bee stings, poison ivy rash, fixing a broken bone of the neighborly DIY repairman and little Suzie getting her ears pierced for her 10th birthday. It is 6pm and the doctor is ready to head home for dinner.
Upon arrival to his small ranch home, he parks in the driveway and notices the freshly planted pansies as he walks towards the front door. Mrs. Love seeing his arrival, greets him at the door, " how was your day today, dear?" she asks with a smiling face.
"is dinner on the table? I am tired and hungry!" he replies walking heavily and with purpose through the living room.
"yes, I did not know that you would be running late. I wish that you would have called," she utters catching up to him as he enters the dining room.
He sits at the table and tucks the cloth napkin into his shirt collar. "if you didn't spend the day playing in the dirt, maybe I wouldn't be eating meatloaf again," he remarks just before taking a bite.
"and it's cold!," he yells slamming the silverware onto the table.
He walks into the kitchen carrying the dinner plate and throws the food into the trashcan. He opens the refrigerator, looking for something, anything to ease his growling stomach.
"It would be nice if you would have the admin assistant call when you are late," Mrs. Love mumbles entering the kitchen.
Dr. Love turns towards his wife with hand outstretched, holding something. "What is this?" he demands.
Her eyes widen as she stares at him. He steps closer to her, pushing the object close to her face.
"Well?" raising his voice.
Mrs. Love grasps at the object and loses her balance. As Dr. Love reaches for his wife, the bone of the frozen porkchop thrust into her throat. He watches as she lies on the linoleum. The blood slowly staining the beige floor.
He retrieves the porkchop, rinses it in the sink and turns on the broiler. The phone call to the police can wait.
